Essay On Earthquake

An Earthquake is described to be a terrifying, and shocking phenomenon that takes place on Earth. It shows the fragility of mankind against nature. Though it lasts for just a few seconds but has the potential to cause massive damage to the place.

250 words essay on earthquake

Earthquake is a trembling movement that happens on the Earth’s surface. When it happens, it causes the Earth to start shaking violently that causes massive destruction at the place. The strong movements inside the crust of the Earth or volcanic action causes a disruption on the Earth. It is a form of a natural disturbance that is characterized as concussion, and convulsion of the ground.

Earthquake originates at a certain point in the Earth’s crust and forces a huge rock to slip all of a sudden. This creates a shaking effect on the surface, that leads to speedy and strong vibrations at the place. Due to the release of rock, a huge amount of energy in the atmosphere. When the effect of the Earthquake is strong, its vibrations are experienced in the neighboring districts too.

Earthquake perceived as a life-threatening, and a hazardous natural disaster that has the ability to occur at any point of time, and anywhere on the planet. Where mild earthquakes appear in the form of minor tremors, larger earthquakes come with strong tremors that starts off with slight tremors but transforms into violent shocks. The intensity, and magnitude of an earthquake is measured using scientific scales that includes Richter scale, altered Mercalli scale, moment magnitude scale, etc.

Earthquakes can happen due to various physical factors. According to scientists, the air compression inside the arch escapes results into shakes of specific areas of the Earth’s surface. This is perceived as a volcanic activity. This natural calamity can happen at any point of anytime and can cause havoc to life of living beings and beneficial natural resources.

500 words essay on earthquake

Earthquake implies a phenomenon that leads the Earth to tremble. Earthquakes are a dreadful natural disaster. Greater the intensity of the earthquakes, greater will be the loss of property, and life. Earthquakes that are weak in intensity, goes unnoticed, whereas severe Earthquakes causes a lot of destruction to a place. Their unpredictable nature is what makes them highly dangerous.

Types of Earthquake

Depending on the way they occur, and the reason for their occurrence, Earthquakes are classified into different types.

The Earth’s crust is made up of uneven slabs of rocks called tectonic plates. It has an abundance of energy. This energy pushes these plates towards or far from each other. This movement causes build of energy between plates, and generates enormous pressure. The result is formation of fault lines, and sudden movement of waves that leads to shaking of the Earth’s surface.

Volcanic Earthquake:

This type of Earthquake happens either due to withdrawal, or injection of Magma or due to change in the pressure among the layers of the Earth’s surface.

Collapse Earthquake:

This type of Earthquakes happens due to collapse in the mines, and caverns that causes seismic waves. This type of Earthquake is weak in intensity.

Effects of Earthquakes

There are several aftereffects of Earthquakes. Some of them have been mentioned below:

  • The quick shaking of the surface is the most noticeable effect of an Earthquake.
  • Earthquakes can cause lead to fires as it damages the gas, and power lines.
  • Depending on the intensity of the Earthquake, it can also lead to ground rupture. It is referred to as the observable breaking of the surface of the Earth that can cause severe harm to infrastructure facilities.
  • Earthquakes can even result in long-wavelength sea waves called as Tsunamis. Such waves in the sea occur due to abrupt movement of massive volumes of water. Tsunamis travels at a rapid speed of 600 kilometers per hour to 800 kilometers per hour. These tsunamis have the ability to cause huge destruction when they reach the sea coast.
  • Another important impact of Earthquake is occurrence of landslides due to instability of slope.
  • Earthquakes can even lead to liquefaction of soil. The reason behind this occurrence is loss of strength of its granular materials. The water-saturated particles in this material converts from solid to a liquid. The result is that solid structures descend into the dissolved deposits.

Precautions to take when faced with an Earthquake

Government has laid down a few safety instructions that every person should follow when they face this natural calamity.

  • People have to stay calm in such a situation. They can stay indoors, or outdoors, but from buildings, power lines, and windows.
  • They should stand at the doorway, against the wall close to the mid of building, at doorway and even crawl under heavy furniture.
  • One should not use any kind of flammable things such as matches, flame, and candles, as there is a possibility of catching fire with damaged gas lines.
  • Do not use elevators to prevent the possibility of getting stuck. Stairs are a good option
  • If you experience Earthquake while running the car, then you should halt the car, remain inside till it stops.
